Buy the standard ESV Scripture Journal New Testament Set when you expect to write alongside several New Testament books over time. For a single study of Romans or James, one relevant journal can be the more economical choice. This is a text-and-notes purchase, not a substitute for a study Bible’s explanatory material.
We checked Crossway’s current set reference, its volume list, the separate spiral-edition reference and the matching Amazon set on 30 September 2026. We have not tested paper with particular pens, measured binding durability or compared theological study outcomes. The selection worksheet and note categories below are editorial tools for using the documented format.
Identify the standard paperback edition
Crossway’s current product page identifies the standard paperback set with ISBN 9781433562440, ISBN-10 1433562448. It lists single-column text at 11.75 points, paired with lightly lined note pages.
The practical attraction is space adjacent to the passage you are reading. You can take the relevant slim volume to a group or sermon rather than carry the complete set. The full slipcase is a storage purchase as well as a reading purchase.
Do not apply these specifications automatically to Illuminated, artist-cover, hardcover or spiral versions. Crossway has separately named products with different ISBNs. A similar title or cover colour does not establish the edition you will receive.
Why nineteen volumes cover twenty-seven books
The number is not a missing-book warning. Crossway’s published volume list groups several shorter books: Colossians with Philemon; 1–2 Thessalonians; 1–2 Timothy with Titus; 1–2 Peter with Jude; and 1–3 John. Other volumes contain individual longer books.
For a group studying one short letter, check which other books share its journal before ordering copies. For an individual planning to work through the New Testament, the nineteen-volume count describes the packaging, while twenty-seven describes the biblical books included.
| Intended use | More sensible starting purchase | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One scheduled study of Romans | Individual Romans journal | Avoid paying for volumes you may not use |
| Several New Testament studies over years | Complete standard set | Consistent format with the relevant volume ready |
| Explanatory notes about difficult passages | Appropriate study resource, possibly alongside a journal | Blank space does not supply commentary |
| Writing while a book lies flat on a desk | Inspect the exact binding edition | Standard paperback and spiral products differ |
| A particular translation used by your group | Verify that translation first | This set contains ESV text |
Keep observation, interpretation and application separate
Our proposed note layout uses three small headings on the facing page:
- Observation: repeated words, paragraph boundaries, speakers and the argument’s movement.
- Interpretation question: what is unclear, which context you need and which explanation you are considering.
- Application: a response that follows from the passage rather than from an isolated phrase.
Add the date and source of a sermon or commentary if you use one. That lets you distinguish the biblical text from your first impression and somebody else’s explanation when you return months later.
For example, a note beside Romans 8:28 should leave room for the surrounding discussion of suffering and God’s purpose. Our Romans 8:28 context guide addresses that interpretation; this review addresses whether the physical note-taking format suits you. Similarly, the James 2:19 guide reads the verse within James’s argument, rather than treat a notebook as an authority on it.
Translation and paper expectations
Choose the ESV because it fits your study context, not because extra writing space settles translation questions. Our translation-comparison guide explains how to compare wording while retaining paragraph context.
The publisher’s paper and binding descriptions are not a pen-performance test. If heavy markers, fountain pens or artwork are central to your use, inspect a sample or the seller’s return terms. We cannot promise no feathering, no show-through or a binding that stays flat under every writing position.
Crossway’s separate spiral-bound set page lists a different ISBN and showed that set as out of print at this check. Remaining retailer stock may differ. Do not use an old launch description as evidence that a particular format is currently available.
Price the books you will actually use
Compare the complete set’s current delivered cost with the individual journals required for your known studies. If a set costs S and the selected individual volumes together cost I, the immediate extra spend is S minus I. That comparison does not need an invented promise that you will eventually fill every volume.
Also account for duplication. A group may supply the specific journal, or you may already own several. A complete matching set can be pleasant to own, but duplicated books have less practical value than new note space you need.
Buying decision
Check the standard paperback New Testament set on Amazon. Match ISBN 9781433562440, the complete nineteen-volume set, condition and seller. Price and availability can change.
Choose the set for repeated text-adjacent note-taking across the New Testament. Choose one journal for one planned study. Choose explanatory resources when your main need is help understanding the passage; the blank page gives you room to work, but does not do that work for you.
